Harbinger of Spring

According to a traditional old calender, spring started on February 4th in Japan.

Nara has still been cold , but it gives visitors serene scenerys like India ink drawings.

Each rain brings spring little by little.  In an icy air,  harbingers of spring are here and there.
Soon Ume - Japanese apricot blossoms will burst into bloom.

a day in Nara (May)

I went to Nara today.
A fine day it was in Nara.  Looking up, sky is clear and blue.
Glancing at a pond by Kofukuji Temple, turtles are taking sun bath.
From the pond, I can see a wooden pagoda peacefully standing among fresh greens of spring.
Walking up stairs and entering Kofukuji Temple, I met deer taking a nap.
Purple clusters of wisteria decorated one of Buddhist halls of the temple.
From where I saw wisterias, I looked back at the pond downstairs.  People were walking around and enjoying a day in Nara.

Around the same time, Bonsai Wisteria Tree Exhibition is held at Nara International Seminar House near Nara National Museum. This is the fifth year of this exhibition. (for pictures of the exhibition click here)

Hanami in Kyoto

Last Sunday, on April 17, I went to Kyoto Botanical Garden and Kamigamo Shrine for a walk. Cherry blossoms were still beautiful, and people were enjoying Hanami or cherry-blossom-viewing-picnics.

On many cherries now in Nara, fresh leaves have sprouted. Some are still beautiful with pink blossoms. A news program tells me today that cherry blossoms in Tohoku area are now in their full bloom.

May Happiness Be With You

Red and white, when used as a set, signal a happy occasion in Japan. In that sense, I saw a very happy tree in Yakushiji Temple in Nara.

Red and white ume plum blooms are blossoming on a single tree.

Those pictures were taken on March 18, but the last blooms of plum are still beautiful in Nara.

May happiness be with you!

Buddha is enjoying cheery blossoms.

Great Buddha in Todaiji Temple is now enjoying cherry blossoms. There are cherry trees planted around the lawn in front of the Great Buddha Hall. Visit Nara in spring and enjoy the picturesque view of the Great Buddha Hall over blooming cherry trees.

The picture above is the Middle Gate in front of the Great Buddha Hall. You can see a little bit of the bloom from outside of the gate, too.

Cherry blossom is blooming!

This is a picture of a shrine known for its 100 years old cherry tree. During a cherry blossom season, we try to make a small detour during our Daily Standard Nara Park and Daily Morning Todaiji tour to incorporate a seasonal touch to our tours. The shrine in the picture is one of our favourite spots for cherry blossom viewing - you'll know where it is during our tour!
